Broughty Athletic are in the hat for the next round of the Scottish Junior Cup, the last 16 as they say, after a fantastic 3-0 away win at Somervell Park against West Region side Cambuslang Rangers. Read below the thoughts of Fed manager Jamie McCunnie on his sides’ victory and performance…
“I thought we did what needed to be done on the day to get through to the last 16 of the competition. The conditions weren’t great, there was no way we were going to be able to play the way we have been of late. We asked the players to adapt and they did that and some.
I thought we started the first half really well and were unlucky not to be ahead at the break. We had a goal chopped off for offside and the Cambuslang keeper made two excellent saves to keep the game level at halftime.
Despite a poor five minute start to the second half, I thought we really grew into the game after that. We knew Cambuslang lost three goals from set-pieces last weekend and we asked the boys to capitalise on this. Ross McCord picked out Gregor Anderson (pictured) with a corner kick and he powered a header into the net to give us the 1-0 lead.
Bryan Duell scored two goals, with two excellent finishes, past their keeper to see us over the line in what was a really pleasing day for everyone that made the trip through.
I’m delighted with the boys, every one of them played a part and made sure we got through to the next round in January. But we now put that result to one side and concentrate on league business starting on Tuesday night at training where we start to prepare for Saturday’s trip across to Tayport. They themselves had a good result at the weekend in the cup, winning 2-1 at Kirriemuir, but we will be going over there to try to get the three points as funnily enough, we’ve not managed to do that for the last two seasons at their ground…”
