Broughty Athletic travel across the River Tay in their quest to retain the GA Engineering Cup they won back in May as they take on Premier League side Tayport in the first round at The Canniepairt.

Both sides contested last seasons final with the Fed running out 5-1 winners at Tannadice Park to win the trophy for the first time in three attempts. The club is hungry for more success and will be looking to make it all the way to the final again this season, starting this Saturday at Tayport.

Hosts Tayport currently sits in sixth position in the Premier League and are managed by former Fed assistant manager Charlie King. He was present with the Fed when the Cup was won in May and knows what its like to be on the winning side and will be putting that to his players come Saturday. Tayport’s recent run of form in their league campaign has seen them draw 2-2 with Whitburn, beat Dalkeith Thistle 4-0 at home but more recently suffered a 3-2 loss at home to St Andrews United.

Both sides have changed playing personnel since the final in May but both clubs as such will be eager and keen to make it to next years final. From the starting eleven for the Fed that day, Ross McCord, Jay Smart and hat-trick hero Grant Lawson have all moved on from the club along with appearing substitutes Danny Cavanagh, Matty Adam and James Collier.

As for this Saturday’s game itself, Fed defender Ryan Suttie hopes to return from injury with a place on the bench having been out for four weeks. Jamie McCunnie will be looking for another start after playing the full ninety minutes in the 3-3 draw away to Bo’ness last Saturday. Ryan Blair will be available despite his sending off in the same game.

All fans are reminded this game is a 1-45pm kick off at The Canniepairt, home of Tayport JFC. Should the game end in a draw after 90mins then a penalty shootout will determine who enters the hat for the second round of the competition…
