Broughty Athletic JFC can confirm that Charlie King has joined the club as assistant to manager Keith Gibson following the recent departure of Stewart Petrie to senior side Montrose FC.

Charlie, pictured left in action against Broughty in September during a GA Engineering fixture, had left his current position as player/manager of North Division side Brechin Vics at the weekend following a career in football.

He began his career away back in 1996 with St Johnstone FC before moving to Livingston in 1999. From there he moved to Stirling Albion on loan in 2001 before securing a permanent move to Brechin City where he played 326 times during an eleven year period, scoring 60 goals in the process. He was released and joined Forfar Athletic on a one-year deal in the summer of 2012 before joining Brechin Vics as player/manager in May 2013.

BAJFC manager Keith Gibson has been looking to fill the gap Stewart Petrie left after he became the new manager at Montrose FC recently and despite umpteen quality applicants for the post of assistant manager it’s Charlie that Keith has gone for to join alongside himself and coach Tony McAuley. Keith had this to say on Charlie joining the club…

“I’m absolutely delighted to confirm Charlie as my new assistant at the club. I’ve known him for years after playing against him when he was at Brechin City. Then we were teammates at Forfar Athletic after that. We’ve always had a good relationship on and off the park so when I heard he was moving on from Brechin Vics I was in touch straight away.

He’s done a great job at Brechin Vics with limited resources and anytime we’ve played them he’s lead a well-drilled side against us and any player who’s played under/alongside him would have nothing but good words to say about him. He’ll fit right in here at Broughty, bringing with him a wealth of experience, enthusiasm and knowledge of the game. He is very focused on training and the way he wants the game played as well as making demands on the standards of training.

Charlie has come in at a good time at the club, as we have no competitive games until the 7th January away to Newtongrange Star, so it’ll give him a good chance to work with and familiar himself with the squad of players we have and see them perform in the two friendlies we have arranged. We have a big six months coming up between now and the end of the season and Charlie’s appointment will give the club a great boost…”

After meeting with Charlie and getting the formalities out of the way, meeting with the squad at training and posing for pictures for our Website Admin Team, Charlie had this to say on joining the Fed

“I’m absolutely delighted to join Broughty Atheltic and be working alongside the gaffer(Keith). I’m looking forward to the new challenge of working with the squad of boys we have here. The club, on and off the park, is moving forward and beginning to create a great name for itself and I’m looking forward to being a part of it and I’m relishing the challenge ahead…”

Everyone at BAJFC welcomes Charlie to the club and wish him all the very best during his time here. The picture above from left to right is captain Jamie Winter, manager Keith Gibson, new assistant manager Charlie King and coach Tony McAuley pictured at a training session at the GA Arena.
