Read below what Broughty Athletic manager Keith Gibson had to say on Saturday’s hard-fought win over Premier League side Forfar West End in the quarter-final of the GA Engineering Cup at Whitton Park, courtesy of Kevin Buchan’s 77th minute headed goal…
“Although I was disappointed with our performance on Saturday against Forfar West End, I was happy just to be in the draw for the semi-final of the GA Cup.
In the first half, I felt FWE looked hungrier all over the park and we were lethargic. We never really threatened their goal, apart from Grant Lawson’s effort one on one with their keeper and they put us under some pressure with free-kicks into the box and several corners.
In the second half, we played a bit better and had a bit more urgency about our play but still not up to standard. Kevin Buchan (pictured left) scored our late goal at a good time in the game, with about 15 minutes to go and we saw the game through to the end despite constant pressure from West End.
But once again we weren’t at our best but we picked up the win and we’re still in the cup competition. That’s two clean sheets in a row against FWE and last week’s against Newtongrange Star and we haven’t played particularly well so we have to take positives from that. We’re back to Super League business next week, which is our bread and butter, as we travel to Musselburgh Athletic and we’ll be looking to get a positive result there and get points on the board as things are starting to tighten up at the foot of the table…”
