Broughty Athletic manager Keith Gibson felt ‘gutted’ after his side’s 2-1 home defeat to Premier League side Jeanfield Swifts on Wednesday night at Whitton Park, in the semi-final of the GA Engineering Cup. Read below what he had to say on the defeat…
“For me, last night’s result and performance in our defeat to Jeanfield was totally unacceptable. Going from the way we played on Saturday away to Penicuik to what we produced last night was night and day.
We never got going in an evenly contested first half, we knew we weren’t playing well and at halftime, I felt if we could raise our game individually and collectively we could go on and win the game. We started the second half in a positive manner and the tempo was a bit better, we put Jeanfield under pressure but they scored with their first attack of the second half after 20/25 minutes and after that, we lacked any real desire or urgency to get back into the game.
I can accept getting beat if every single player has given their lot but I don’t feel this was the case last night for whatever reason. It was a semi-final with a chance to go and play at Tannadice in the final. For me looking at the game, we played like it was an end of season/pre-season meaningless game and this was the most disappointing thing for me. We need to move on and learn from this, we have another big cup game this Saturday and I’ll be looking for a big reaction from every player…”
