Broughty Athletic had to come from behind late on to secure all three points with a 3-2 win today at Whitton Park against visitors Fauldhouse United.
Broughty started the game with one change from the opening two league games of the season, Stewart McConnachie coming in to replace Jake Mair.
The game was 6mins old and it was the visitors who tested Iain Ross in the Broughty goal but he saved well. 17mins and Broughty should have taken the lead, McConnachie was through one on one with the Fauldhouse keeper but his weak effort was saved well when a goal looked certain. Then on 27mins the Fed take the lead courtesy of a Jay Smart headed goal from a corner,1-0.
Broughty should have doubled their lead three minutes later but James Collier’s effort as he bore down on goal was saved well and out for a corner. Jay Smart skimmed the crossbar with a header from the resulting corner kick. On 33mins once again Broughty had another chance, Brian Clark’s cross come shot was palmed away by the Fauldhouse keeper. Then the final chance before halftime came on 38mins for the visitors, they broke clear in the Broughty box but Ross saved the shot from close range. H/T 1-0.
The second half was slow to get going and it took until the 63 minute for the first real effort on goal, Paul McLellan’s low cross found Danny Cavanagh but his weak shot was easily saved. 65mins Fauldhouse had a shot from inside the box but it went wide. Then on 74mins the visitors got their equalizer. A free-kick was awarded, to the disbelieve of the home bench, it was swung into the box but despite Ryan Suttie and Iain Ross’s efforts, the ball was nipped into the net,1-1.
76mins and Broughty should have scored again, this time, Ross McCord’s 25yrd free-kick was saved well to the left of the Fauldhouse goal by the keeper. 79mins saw the visitors take the lead against the run of play. With Broughty attacking upfield, the ball was lost and launched towards Ross in the goal, Suttie couldn’t make the challenge and the Fauldhouse striker shot past Ross into the net off the post,1-2.
Broughty to their disbelieve never gave up and equalized on 86mins courtesy of a Ross McCord (pictured left) goal in a crowded Fauldhouse box,2-2. Then further drama in the 90th minute, Broughty’s Paul McLellan was brought down in the box and up stepped Jamie McCunnie to slam home the penalty, picture above, and secure the points for the Fed,3-2.
Summing up… Broughty should have been 3 or four up in the first half easily but for poor finishing. Played some great football and controlled most of the half. The second half Fauldhouse were let back into the game and Broughty were punished. But a new desire and fight throughout the team saw them regroup and deservedly equalize and sneak a winner in the dying seconds. It could have gone horribly wrong after Fauldhouse took the lead but for a great fightback and team spirit.
Man of the Match for the Fed, for tormenting, twisting and turning through the Fauldhouse players, it goes to Brian Clark.
