A goal with seconds to go saw Broughty Athletic suffer a 2-1 defeat in their pre-arranged friendly match against a Montrose FC side managed by former Fed assistant manager Stewart Petrie at the GA Arena tonight.
Broughty took the lead in the first half courtesy of Grant Lawson on 18mins, his cross was bundled into the net by the Montrose keeper whilst under a challenge from the Fed’s Kevin Buchan, 1-0.
The second half was minutes old when Stewart McConnachie saw his powerful shot tipped over the bar when a goal looked certain. 55mins a Jamie Winter long-range effort was well saved with McConnachie seeing the rebound saved again by the visiting keeper. On 72mins Montrose’s pressure and possession paid off when a shot from the edge of the box beat substitute goalkeeper Josh Allardyce, 1-1. Then with virtually the last kick of the game Montrose scored the winner from a Fed defensive mistake. Allardyce tried to play out a short goal kick, rather than kick the ball up the park as the final whistle was due any second, the Fed defense lost possession and the goal was scored.
A great workout for the whole squad, with several substitutes, used at halftime by both teams. Broughty’s next friendly is against local side Dundee Violet next Tuesday at the GA Arena.
