A place in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Junior Cup was a stake on Saturday when Broughty Athletic welcomed Glasgow side St Rochs to Whitton Park. Two penalty goals from Bryan Duell saw the Fed threw in a narrow 2-1 win and spark scenes of jubilation throughout all connected at the club.

Read below the manager’s thoughts on how he thought the day went…

“The players got what they deserved on Saturday with a hard-fought cup tie win against a competitive St Rochs side. Before the game, we had three of our most experienced players missing (club captain Graham Hay ill, Ross McCord suspended & Josh Skelly injured) then during the game Ryan Ferguson had to come off after 20 minutes (pic below). At that point, you do fear the worst!

However, we showed what a good squad we have now at the club and boys are desperate to do well when they get the jersey on game day. The players that were available trained well all week and gave everything they had on Saturday.

At times throughout the game, we played some good football and we caused all sorts of problems for St Rochs, the two penalties being great examples of that. The first one, Ryan Ferguson broke from midfield with pace right into their box for the handball and the second one was a great one-two between Derryn Kesson and Brad Smith with Derryn taken out by their keeper.

On another day it could have been a more convincing win had taken our chances in front of goal, especially in the second half. However, it proved to be a nervous finish but we are all now absolutely elated to be through to the next round, the quarter-finals.

It was a really good turn out by both sets of supporters and the neutrals that came along which created a great atmosphere so thanks to each and everyone that came along and gave their support. Also a big thanks to everyone behind the scenes that gave up their time to help out on the day once again.

But now it’s back to league business, we now have a few boys injured or with slight niggles, we need to assess them on Tuesday at our training session and see who is available for selection next weekend as we face North End…”
