Following Saturday’s 2-1 away win over Musselburgh Athletic, Broughty Athletic are guaranteed a top seven finish in the sixteen team East Region Super League for the 2016/17 season with two games still to play.
Having won promotion to the Super League following a dramatic play-off win over Armadale Thistle back in 2014/15 Broughty’s first task was to stay in the Super League in their maiden season, they did so finishing tenth on 39 points. That was classed as a great achievement for the club.
Manager Keith Gibson put it to his players to better their last season position this season and following Wednesday night’s win at Broxburn Athletic the Fed past the 39 point mark hitting 40 points with the 2-0 win. The points total was then extended with Saturday’s 2-1 win at Musselburgh. If not for the dip in form between October and early March, with no wins recorded, only 4 draws with 6 defeats, the Fed could have been in a higher position with more points on the board.
But to finish in the top seven of a tight Super League is a fantastic achievement for the club season who still have two home games against Bonnyrigg Rose and Lochee United to come. There is also a GA Engineering Cup final to look forward to as well when the Fed take on Tayport on Sunday 28th May at Tannadice Park.
With some signing targets on the horizon, some contracts being extended, the Fed will again look to go one better next season in their third year in the East Region Super League.
