It is heartbreaking beyond belief following the tragic death of former Broughty Athletic player Ryan Blair at home on Hogmanay…

Ryan signed for the Fed from NCR Amateurs back in the summer of 2016 when then-manager Keith Gibson spotted him playing, he stepped in and knew there was something about him and wanted him in his side.

Ryan made his debut in the 2016/17 season, a fantastic 2-1 away win at Linlithgow Rose, the former Super League champions, and he settled in with his teammates immediately like he’d been there for years. His fellow players welcomed him and made him feel right at home and one of the boys. Former players at Broughty, the likes of Jamie Winter, Paul McLellan, Kevin Milne, Kerr Hay, Jay Smart, Grant Lawson, Iain Ross, Brian Clark, Danny Cavanagh but to name a few will cherish the times, the banter, the training sessions, the wins, the losses they all shared with Ryan. He was so likeable, loveable, cheeky, shy and funny.

It never came as a surprise when local rivals Lochee United stepped him and signed him following a loan spell at Dundee North End, they saw the fantastic potential he had in the left-back position as they were riding high in the Junior scene and knew Ryan would help benefit them. But, Ryan never managed to star the way he did at Broughty and eventually left and joined Paul Marr’s Downfield JFC.

Ryan starred for them in their first game of the new season in November 2020, ironically a 3-1 win against Broughty Athletic at Whitton Park (pictured above), the last game he was photographed playing the beautiful game…

Everyone and we mean everyone, in the game will miss Ryan and he will never be forgotten…

Fly high Blairy, you’re at peace now…
