Broughty Athletic secured three precious Super League points as they beat visitors Newtongrange Star 1-0 at Whitton Park today.
A goal five minutes before the halftime whistle courtesy of Stewart McConnachie was enough to separate the sides in a game of very few chances. It was Broughty’s second win in a row following their 4-2 win last Saturday at Stonehaven FC in the GA Cup and stops their three-game losing streak in the Super League and it was Newtongrange’s second defeat in a row following last weeks 1-0 home loss to Tayport.
Both McConnachie and Paul Lunan tested the Star keeper with efforts in the first half along with several corners but it was McConnachie’s that broke the deadlock. A free-kick was played quickly by Jamie McCunnie deep inside Broughty’s half on the right, he found McConnachie, he ran goalwards and slotted home past the advancing keeper.
Newtongrange tested Broughty goalkeeper Iain Ross too on a couple of occasions in the first half but saved well both times. Broughty’s defence coped well with the long ball tactic played by the visitors, both Barry Myles and Bastien Wibaut dealing with the high balls and lone striker.
The second half offered little between the sides as in goal chances and visitors Newtongrange were reduced to ten men with five minutes to go, courtesy of a red card. Broughty held on for the points, valuable points too with two teams around them, Fauldhouse and St Andrews both losing their games.
