Broughty Athletic ran out comfortable 7-1 winners against local side Dundee Violet at Whitton Park tonight in their first pre-season friendly match.

The Fed started with two trialists in the starting line up, Greg McNaughton and Kieren McWalter. Missing due to holiday commitments were goalkeeper Iain Ross and new signing Fraser Smith. Other new signings Garry Kenneth, Kevin Milne and Dayle Robertson all started the game. Drew Fleming and Graham Hay missed through injury.

Both sides along with the many of the crowd who turned up observed a minutes silence before kick-off in honour of club physio Sandy Dorward who passed away on Saturday.

Two minutes on the clock and the young and energetic Violet side tested John Sinclair in the goal but the shot went wide of his goalpost. 15mins and the deadlock was broken courtesy of Paul McLellan shooting beyond the keeper from just inside the 18yrd box, 1-0. 26mins and the Fed doubled their lead with new signing Kevin Milne slamming home from 8yrds out, 2-0. On the half hour mark, Dayle Robertson should have scored the Fed’s third goal but his chipped effort went wide.

35mins on the clock and McLellan tried his luck again, this time a 25yrd free-kick going wide of the post. Then on 38mins, he tried again with another free-kick, this time it was saved well by the Violet keeper only to see the ball fall at the feet of Kevin Milne and he slotted home from 3yrds out, 3-0. Robertson had another chance to get on the scoresheet but his effort went past an open goal after McLellan’s low cross from the right side. Then the final chance of the half fell to substitute Stewart McConnachie, his effort hitting the post and cleared. H/T 3-0.

53mins saw Brian Clark’s run and chip go wide of the goalpost with the keeper beaten. Then on 57mins Broughty were awarded a penalty after Robertson was brought down in the box, he got himself up and slotted home the resulting penalty kick, 4-0. Two minutes later Robertson doubled his tally when he turned in the box and slammed home, 5-0.

On the hour mark, Robertson turned provider for McConnachie to slot home Broughty’s sixth goal of the game as they both were through on the Violet goalkeeper, 6-0. 63mins saw John Sinclair saving well from a Violet attack. But on 67mins he couldn’t stop Violet putting the ball into his net to make it 6-1 despite offside screams from the home side.

Then the scoring was complete on 72mins when substitute Jamie Winter found Greg McNaughton on the right side, he played the ball into the box and Robertson slammed home to complete his hat-trick, 7-1. F/T 7-1
