Broughty Athletic finished their pre-season programme with a comfortable 4-1 win over amateur side Cupar Hearts at St Andrews University Sports ground tonight.
Goals from Jay Smart, Stewart McConnachie, Jamie McCunnie and captain Jamie Winters gave Fed manager Keith Gibson his fourth win in his side’s five pre-season warm-up programme with just a 1-0 defeat to Highland League side Fraserburgh FC. Keith had this to say…
“The lads played well again tonight and I’m pleased with their performance, not only tonight but in all the five games we’ve played. Now the hard stuff starts on Saturday as we travel to face Linlithgow Rose in our first Super League game of the season. It will be a tough game, we narrowly lost out there last season, going down 2-1 after playing well and matching Rose throughout the game. We beat them 3-2 at Whitton Park early on in the season so we know what we’re capable of, despite some players leaving the club and others coming in.
We will go to Prestonfield Park with the ambition to come home with all three points but it will be no easy task. Rose will no doubt be there or thereabouts come the top places at the end of the season and I hope we can be up there too. After Saturday we have a good chance to get some home points on the board as we face both Jeanfield Swifts and Fauldhouse United within four days of each other, hard games but a chance to grab valuable points at home early doors.
We have a good squad assembled now, we brought in some great experienced talent in Ross McCord and James Collier along with a bright young and energetic, Ryan Blair.
And with Stewart Petrie (pictured right) joining as our assistant manager, things are looking very good here at the club, both on and off the park. We possibly might get in one more player, we just have to wait and see. Failing that, I’m confident we can improve on last years finish in tenth place and push further up the league…”
