Broughty Athletic ended their two-game losing streak in the Super League today, defeating Tayport 4-2 at The Canniepairt in a game that enthralled the watching fans, to bring home the three points.

On 7mins Broughty goalkeeper Iain Ross saved well diving low to his right to save a Tayport shot from the edge of the box. Then on 10mins it was Broughty that broke the deadlock when Jamie Winter fed loan striker Kevin Buchan through the middle and he struck a low shot into the bottom corner of the net from the edge of the box,0-1. Then on 22mins Buchan had a chance to double his tally but his effort was well saved when through. Just 60secs later Buchan again had a chance to get on the scoresheet for a second time but he hit the post after Lawson crossed low from the left.

29mins were on the clock and Broughty were cruising in chances, this time Lawson skimming the outside of the post with his effort after McConnachie cut his cross to him. 40mins and Tayport neared the equalizer but for Paul Lunan’s block and clearance when a possible shot on goal looked likely. 42mins and Tayport had another effort which went wide of the post. Then in injury time in the first half Broughty finally doubled their lead. A free-kick was floated in by Jamie Winter finding Kevin Buchan who collected the ball, turned and stabbed home his and Broughty’s second goal,0-2.

Second half and Broughty continued where they left off and on 54mins Jamie Winter this time tested the Tayport keeper which a shot which was well saved. 56mins Tayport saw a header skim past Ross’s goalpost when a goal looked more likely again. Then just on the hour mark Broughty scored again when Paul McLellan received the ball just inside his own half and raced goalwards beating two defenders, rounding the keeper and slotting home from a tight angle,0-3.

Then three minutes later Tayport started their very impressive fightback, slicing through a static Broughty defence to slot home past Ross,1-3. Then on 68mins the hosts scored again, this time from a corner which was headed in unchallenged to give the hosts some hope,2-3. 73mins was on the clock when Tayport thought they’d secured a deserved equalizer only to see their long range effort rattle the crossbar and cleared to safety.

Then constant pressure and effort from the hosts for the remainder of the game saw them push and push for the equalizer but it wasn’t to be as Broughty managed to drive up the park down the right side, thinking Lawson would keep the ball in the corner he had other idea’s as he cut inside the box, leaving three defenders helpless then he calmly slotted home into the net to quieten down his former fans and seal the points for The Fed.

What a game, Broughty cruising at 3-0 up until a gallant fightback and much deserved brace from the home side had Broughty with their backs against the wall for the most of the second half. Defenders Jay Smart and Paul Lunan deserve credit for the superb display at the back despite losing the two goals, and the hosts deserve credit for a superb fightback effort, in which they’ll be gutted not to take anything from the game, but they could of well and truly of been out of it if Broughty had put away their several other clear cut chances.

Broughty will be looking to record back to back victories as they entertain St Andrews United next Saturday at Whitton Park in the Super League.
