Broughty Athletic are through to the first round of the GA Engineering Cup after defeating hosts Brechin Vics 4-3 on penalties in their preliminary round clash following a 0-0 draw in ninety minutes of football.
Despite a battering from the home side in the first half, it was Fed keeper Iain Ross keeping his side in the game with several saves before halftime, when the home side could easily have been ahead. Two disallowed goals in the second half from Jonathan Smart and Lee Sibanda saw The Fed frustrated and onto a penalty shootout it went.
With the home side scoring three, hitting the crossbar with one and goalkeeper Iain Ross saving another, it was left to Jamie McCunnie, Paul McLellan, Dougie Cameron and Lee Sibanda, to score theirs with Grant Lawson missing his and into the next round for Broughty.
The win now sets up a first round match against Tayport at The Canniepairt with the date to be scheduled.
